The latest reports and rumors suggest that there is plenty of interest from teams seeking relief help from Jonathan Papelbon of the Philadelphia Phillies. What is not a surprise is the fact that some are wondering if the trade will actually get done. Included in those wondering if a deal will get done is the always outspoken Papelbon himself. As another trade deadline nears, is it really that important that a trade gets completed? The answer is yes.

Papelbon takes some heat from people here and there because he speaks his mind about his current situation, but he actually does have a point. For years there have been teams interested in Paps and he has been interested in going elsewhere yet nothing has happened. What is different this season? The obvious answer is that this season there have been changes in the front office which are supposed to change things. One change that was not made was in the GM office, however.

Ruben Amaro Jr. is still in that office, and it is still on his shoulders to make the moves that need to be made. It might be a little difficult to get the price right for Cole Hamels or to figure out where he wants to go so that his no-trade clause will not be a problem. You can give him that, though it’s his job to get those types of deals done. When it comes to Papelbon, however, there is no excuse. He has said he wants to go somewhere else, nearly anywhere else. He has called the front office out publicly.

Does he have the right to do that? Of course he does. Look past his outspoken nature to his point in suggesting that the front office change is supposed to change things and now is the time for that to be shown. He is correct. There is no excuse whatsoever for Papelbon not to be traded. If Amaro cannot get this deal done for someone wanted by other teams who wants to go elsewhere, then it is time for Amaro to finally take on a different job.
