Chicago Cubs' Call-Up of Kyle Schwarber Will Spark the Offense

When the Chicago Cubs went on a road trip against a couple American League teams in June, they called up catching prospect Kyle Schwarber to DH. After those two series though, he was sent back down.

It now appears that Schwarber will be called up once again as starting catcher Miguel Montero is dealing with a thumb injury. If his first stint in the major leagues is any indication, he will provide a much-needed boost to the stagnant Cubs offense.

The 22-year-old went 8-for-22 in six games while hitting a home run and driving in six runs. Of course, it’s a small sample size, but Schwarber should be in the Cubs lineup even once Montero comes back from injury. He can spot start at catcher and move to left field to start when he’s not behind the plate.

The bottom line is that the Cubs’ team batting average of .239 is fourth-worst in the major leagues and they need some serious help. If they’re not going to add hitting at the deadline, they need to add from within. Schwarber is their best option.

The front office loves what Schwarber brings to the table; he has knocked the cover off the ball in the minor leagues. In 147 games at various levels of minor league baseball, he is hitting .333 with 34 home runs and 102 RBIs.

Let him get his feet wet in the major leagues by putting him in the middle of the order with Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant and the Cubs lineup could be dangerous once again.

If the Cubs decide to let Schwarber get regular time in left field, here is what the starting lineup could look like:

1. CF Dexter Fowler

2. 1B Rizzo

3. 3B Bryant

4. LF Schwarber

5. RF Jorge Soler

6. SS Starlin Castro

7. C Miguel Montero

8. Pitcher

9. 2B Addison Russell

That could be a pretty formidable lineup. With a boost to the offense, the Cubs might just emerge as the front-runners to win the second Wild Card spot in the National League.
