MLB Rumors: Cleveland Indians in the Market for a Michael Bourn Replacement

The All-Star break is officially behind us, as the second half of the MLB season kicks off tonight. Across the entire league, there are a handful of teams who are trying to rebound from an underwhelming start to the year.

The Cleveland Indians are definitely one of these teams. They’re also a club many are keeping an eye on as the trade deadline nears.

I noted earlier this week it’s much more likely the Indians sell instead of buy at the deadline. That said, if there’s a potential upgrade to be found on the market, one which won’t require selling the farm, you can bet Cleveland will be intrigued.

While there haven’t been any rumors of significance just yet, the common thought process around the league is that the Tribe may be on the hunt for some outfield help. Specifically, Cleveland may be trying to find someone who can replace a player that was once a marquee signing for the team, but is now bottoming out like there’s no tomorrow.

Michael Bourn, at one point proof Indians ownership wasn’t as cheap as fans thought, has been abysmal this season. And, if there’s a player available who could replace him, you can bet Cleveland is going to show some interest.

Bourn’s tenure with the Tribe started out merely average, and has tumbled ever since. He’s still more than capable when it comes to fielding. That said, his at-bats this year can be downright painful to watch. Batting .222 and planted at the bottom of the order for most of the season, calling Bourn a disappointment is being polite.

As for who could replace him, there do appear to be a couple options Cleveland could inquire about.

One of the most popular names is Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez. Though he’s seen a bit of a decline in his defense, he’s a two-time All-Star who has much more pop at the plate than Bourn. Currently 18.5 games out in the NL Central, it’s safe to say the Brewers are in a position to sell. Gomez has two years left on his contract, and is likely available for a good deal.

It’s tough to believe the Indians could do a one-for-one swap, unless the Brewers haven’t seen any footage of Bourn this year. It’s possible Milwaukee isn’t even interested in Bourn to begin with. This doesn’t mean a deal can’t be done, it just means Cleveland could be in an awkward position where they replace Bourn without actually getting rid of him.

In addition to Gomez, Cameron Maybin of the Atlanta Braves and Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies are potential targets as well. Both have their fair share of intrigue and could be solid fits in center field. Personally, I’d still prefer Gomez if he can be had.

You’d like to hope the Indians are working the phones as we speak. Though Tribe manager Terry Francona has a knack for staying loyal to his veterans, it’s tough to believe Bourn has much rope left.

When a player is having an off year, it may be difficult to just wash your hands of him. That said, Bourn hasn’t really shown any signs he’s worth the big money he was signed for in 2013, especially after becoming an incredible liability at the plate this year.

I still see the Indians working to shed some veteran contracts here and there in the trade market as the most likely scenario. At the same time, there’s a decent chance a replacement for Bourn is available. It would be wise for Cleveland to explore any and all avenues to try and find one.
