Pittsburgh Pirates Rumors: Trading For Josh Reddick Doesn't Make Any Sense

There are rumors swirling that the Pittsburgh Pirates could have interest in dealing for Oakland Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick. While Reddick has had a tremendous first half of the 2015 MLB season, he would likely come with an expensive price tag, and the move would signal that the Pirates are ready to move on from Gregory Polanco. It wouldn’t make sense to part with some of the organization’s top prospects and give up on the 23-year-old Polanco.

The Pirates have the third-best record in MLB and have closed the gap in the NL Central to 2.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals. The team has been on a tear for the last month or so, and that’s with Polanco being in the lineup every day. He’s only hitting .237 with a .315 OBP, three home runs and 23 RBIs, but he does have 17 stolen bases and plays solid defense in right field.

Reddick, on the other hand, is hitting .287 with a .343 OBP, 11 home runs and 51 RBIs, which again is a great start to the season, but would his addition really affect the Pirates’ chances to win a World Series? I don’t believe it would, and it could be a negative move to break the chemistry of a team that’s been clicking on all cylinders recently. Athletics general manager Billy Beane would likely request one or two of the Pirates’ best prospects in return, but the risk wouldn’t be worth the reward.

If the Pirates are looking for help on the trade market, general manager Neal Huntington should target a first baseman to platoon with Pedro Alvarez, or possibly some bullpen help. Aside from that, the team should stand pat. The Pirates are in prime position without Reddick, and giving up on a player like Polanco, who is so young and talented, could be more detrimental to the team’s future than adding a bat like Reddick’s would help.
