Dansby Swanson Gives Arizona Diamonbacks' Fans A Reason To Be Optimistic

The Arizona Diamondbacks and no. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson agreed to a contract that will give Swanson a $6.5 million signing bonus. The deadline for the two sides to come to an agreement was 5 p.m., and the deal was supposedly executed with only minutes to spare. The bonus was actually less than MLB had slotted for the top pick in the draft, which was $8,616,900.

Swanson was a two-time All-American at Vanderbilt, and he also was a Golden Spikes Award finalist this past season, which is awarded to the best player in college baseball. He finished the season batting .335 with 15 home runs and 64 RBIs, as the Commodores finished the season one win short of their second consecutive National Championship.

While Swanson isn’t necessarily a power-hitter, he does have a nice line-drive stroke that should help him hit a number of balls in the gap. In fact, Swanson led the nation last season with 27 doubles, which is a great sign for his development at the next level.

With his approach at the plate and low-strikeout percentage, Swanson will fit perfectly in the two-hole in the Diamondbacks lineup, just ahead of Paul Goldschmidt. If Swanson gets into the Diamondbacks system immediately and finds his timing, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get a September call-up, especially if the team falls further out of contention. Swanson is as polished a college player as there is, and it shouldn’t take him long to make an impact on the major league level.

With Swanson now under contract, the Diamondbacks suddenly have a great young nucleus to build around. Goldschmidt, Ender Inciarte, A.J. Pollock, Jake Lamb, Yasmany Tomas and now Swanson are all under 27-years-old, and gives the Diamondbacks one of the best lineups in baseball for years to come. Now it’s up to general manager Dave Stewart to find some pitching help, and the team could become World Series threats sooner rather than later.
