After the stellar first halves that Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke turned in, the team’s rotation could be dangerous in the playoffs. With a potent third starter to go behind them, they could be lethal.

Los Angeles suffers a major drop off in the starting rotation after Kershaw and Greinke, and in order to compete in the playoffs, it appears they will have to add a No. 3 starter. All indications point to them being willing to do exactly that.

The top two arms on the market are Cole Hamels and Johnny Cueto, and with the Dodgers already shelling out a $275 million payroll this season, why not aim for the stars? These two are the top two on L.A.’s radar.

Hamels still has three years left on his contract (including a fourth-year team option), so he would be acquired for a different reason than Cueto.

Greinke, who at 1.39, had the fourth-lowest All-Star break ERA in MLB history this season, can opt out of his current contract after the season. As an insurance policy, L.A. can grab Hamels and know they will still have a good pairing at the top, even if Greinke walks.

Cueto, on the other hand, would be a rental player since he becomes a free agent after the season. That means he might cost the Dodgers less prospects, but he also wouldn’t provide an insurance policy if Greinke leaves after the season.

Speaking of prospects, the Dodgers would have to give up some good ones in order to acquire either hurler, but they’re willing and able to do so. Outside of their top two prospects, shortstop Corey Seager and pitcher Julio Urias, they appear willing to include any prospects in a potential deal.

With so much money already devoted to this team, why not go for it all in 2015? Los Angeles has been disappointing in the playoffs over the last few years, so they need a change.

Cueto or Hamels could provide exactly that.
