Cincinnati Reds Rumors: Mike Leake Will Be The First To Be Traded

The Cincinnati Reds have been pretty quiet on the trade front so far, but don’t expect that to last too much longer. While countless rumors have been reported surrounding Aroldis Chapman and Johnny Cueto, it’s Mike Leake who will be traded first.

The Houston Astros were the first team to pull the trigger on a deal as they acquired Oakland Athletics‘ pitcher Scott Kazmir earlier this afternoon for prospects. Kazmir has been putting up numbers similar to Cueto, but has not had health issues like Cueto has shown recently.

Cueto had a rough last outing, walking six batters in and getting a no decision. There have been growing concerns surrounding his health, which may have hurt his stock a little and may be part of the reason behind the lack of activity of Cueto’s front.

It doesn’t seem that the team is fully on board with the idea of parting with Chapman. He still has another year before he hits free agency.

Mike Leake has been another story completely. He has done nothing but elevate his stock over his past three outings. Over his past three starts he has compiled the following line:

22.0 innings / 11 hits / 2 ER / 3 BBs /18 Ks / 3-0

Leake was already an attractive piece to others due to his relatively low price tag compared to the other aces on the trade block. So far Walt Jocketty has said he has not been blown away by any offers and expect that to continue for Cueto and Chapman. A fair deal for Leake is more likely to happen before any fair deal for Cueto or Chapman. So while fans are waiting for Cueto to be dealt, they should instead shift their attention to Leake because he may be closer to being shown the door than most people think.
