MLB Trade Rumors: 5 Reasons Why Toronto Blue Jays Should Make Move for David Price

Lefty ace David Price is back on the trade market just one season after being traded at the deadline and there are plenty of teams interested in him. Among those teams are the Toronto Blue Jays who must do everything in their power to acquire him. Here are five reasons why they should go all out to land him.

5. It Would Keep Him from the Yankees

Beyond getting Price for their own rotation, acquiring the lefty would keep him from joining the rotation of the division rival Yankees. With Price, the Yankees would be the odds-on favorite to win the American League East. Toronto can’t afford to let the Bronx Bombers land him, and while keeping him out of New York shouldn’t be their primary motivation to acquire him, it should be in the back of their minds.

4. A Big Splash Would Be Out of Character

In the past few years, the Blue Jays have been mentioned in trade rumors numerous times, but have never made a big splash. This year, it could be different. If the front office actually tries to make a splash with Price, it would tell the team that they’re serious about winning this season. Beyond grabbing a pitcher who would really help them, it would increase the team’s sense of urgency that has appeared to be lacking.

3. This Much Offensive Talent Can't Go to Waste

One look at the Blue Jays’ lineup and you would guess they were in first place and well on their way to a playoff berth. However, because of their lack of depth and consistency in the starting rotation, that’s not the case. This team can’t afford to let this great lineup miss out on a shot in the postseason. Acquiring Price would provide a boost to the rotation while the offense continues to produce.

2. The Farm System Can Afford It

Toronto has a very strong farm system, so they can afford to acquire Price if they really want to. Their trio of outfielder Dalton Pompey and pitchers Daniel Norris and Aaron Sanchez is excellent. The Blue Jays would certainly have to trade one of those players and would potentially have to give up two of those players to land Price. While it seems steep, it’s worth it for the Blue Jays to get a shot at the playoffs as their window for contending begins to shut.

1. He Would Close Gap Between Blue Jays and Yankees in AL East

The most obvious reason the Blue Jays should make a move for David Price is that it would close the gap between them and the Yankees in the division race. New York seems like the cream of the crop right now in the AL East, but with Price, the Blue Jays would be awfully close to them. Let’s say Price makes 12 starts after being acquired by Toronto. If the Blue Jays go 9-3 in those games as opposed to 6-6 (since they’ve hovered around .500 all season), that’s three extra games in the standings. This is all hypothetical, but it serves to show that acquiring Price could be the difference between the Blue Jays making and missing the playoffs this season.
