Toronto Blue Jays Rumors: Carlos Carrasco Will Be Good Now And In The Future

It’s no secret the Toronto Blue Jays are looking for starting pitching help this deadline, but it’s unclear what route they will take to address that problem. A new option has arisen in the way of Carlos Carrasco, who the Cleveland Indians may consider dealing this deadline. Due to his talent and contract situation, Carrasco might just be their best pitching option this deadline.

Before looking at why Carrasco makes so much sense for the Blue Jays, it’s important to note that he would likely cost the Blue Jays an impressive package of prospects. Toronto has the organizational talent to pull it off if they want to, but it remains to be seen how much they’re willing to give up to land the Indians’ righty.

Carrasco has been up and down this season, going 10-7 with a 3.94 ERA, but he has proven to be a legitimate power arm. He has fanned 128 batters in just 114.1 innings in 2015. That type of arm certainly appeals to Toronto, who is in desperate need of a starting pitcher.

He wouldn’t just be good for the stretch run of 2015, though. Carrasco is just 28 years old and is under contract for three more seasons, in which he is owed $19 million in total. There are also two team options on the deal that could keep him locked up through 2020. That’s what we call a team-friendly deal.

Marcus Stroman looked like the real deal in his short time in the major leagues, going 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA last season. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, he was knocked out for the season in spring training this season. Once he rejoins the rotation next year, it would be nice to be able to pair another young pitcher like Carrasco with him.

By dealing for Carrasco, if they don’t have to give up too much, the Blue Jays get the best of both worlds. They get improved pitching down the stretch and they get a dynamic duo in the rotation for years to come.
