When it was reported that the Detroit Tigers might make ace David Price available, teams started contacting them immediately. The list of teams could grow as big as eight teams.

One of those teams is reportedly the San Francisco Giants. Originally, it was thought that the Giants would stand pat this trade deadline after getting pitchers Matt Cain and Jake Peavy back from injury. Now it seems like the team might be more aggressive than previously thought.

If San Fran lands Price, it will seriously mix up the playoff race in the National League. Presently, the Giants are within striking distance of the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of a battle for the second wild card spot. With Price on their roster, things could get interesting.

First of all, they could challenge the Dodgers in the division. That would put L.A. in the wild card race as well, although they would be tough to beat if they land another top-of-the-rotation starter.

Theoretically then, a very talented Pittsburgh Pirates team could be in a position to be playing a road playoff game in the wild card one-game playoff. Now, that would be interesting.

Let’s take a look at how Price could change the Giants for the better.

If he made 12 starts down the stretch and the team went 9-3 in those starts, that would be a couple games ahead of their current pace. Would a couple games be enough difference to win them the National League West? It very well could.

All of this is theoretical, even the potential acquisition of Price by the Giants, but it’s fun to think about the possibility. If Price is pitching for the Giants in October, San Francisco has the best chance of repeating of any team in recent memory.
