As the MLB trading deadline approaches, it’s clear that the Cincinnati Reds will be sellers. The only real question is how many players will General Manager Walt Jocketty deal before the end of next week.

Speculation surrounds a number of players on the Reds’ roster. Outfielder Jay Bruce would be a nice addition for a team that needs a left-handed power hitter. Marlon Byrd could add experience and depth to a team. Aroldis Chapman could become a key bullpen weapon for a team down the stretch. And Mike Leake is a solid starter who could fill out a rotation that needs one more piece to get them to the postseason.

Then, there’s the real prize that the Reds can offer. Starting pitcher Johnny Cueto would be a No. 1 starter for most of baseball’s contenders. Plus, having Cueto in the rotation in the postseason could be enough to get the acquiring team through another round in the playoffs.

The bad news for teams trying to trade for Cueto is that the price went up on Saturday night. Cueto pitched very well in a 5-2 Cincinnati win over the Colorado Rockies in Denver. Facing a potent lineup in one of the best hitting parks in the majors, Cueto pitched eight innings, giving up four hits and no runs, while striking out five and walking just one. The scouts in attendance will surely send sparkling reports to their front offices as the general managers try to work out a deal for Cueto.

For their part, the Reds need to get a couple of quality pieces in return for their ace right-hander. After Saturday’s start, Jocketty and his staff can ask for even more.
