After being suspended for all of last season for violating the MLB‘s substance abuse policy and interfering with the investigation, New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez became one of the biggest social pariahs the game of baseball has ever seen. After a very surprising 2015 season so far, he’s now looking to become the most prolific home run hitter the game has ever seen.

After a three-homer night against the Minnesota Twins, it’s time to start thinking about the possibility of A-Rod breaking Barry Bonds‘ all-time record of 762 home runs. While it would be tough, it’s not impossible.

After his great night in Minnesota, his home run total sits at 677. That leaves 86 home runs until he breaks the record. Rodriguez is 39 years old and will turn 40 on July 27.

The slugger has 23 home runs this season. Let’s say he finishes with 35 on the year. That would leave him at 689 in his career, 74 shy of breaking the all-time mark. That means he would need 25 home runs a season for three years over the ages of 40-43.

Given the likelihood of the body breaking down past the age of 40, it will be hard for A-Rod, but if he stays on the field, there’s an outside chance. He surprised us all this season, so who’s to say he can’t do it a little longer?

Like him or hate him, Rodriguez has defied expectations at every step of his career and this 2015 season has been perhaps the most dramatic example. Now he just needs three more surprising seasons like that and he will have the most hallowed record in the game all to himself.
