The Oakland Athletics were a better team than their record indicated. Unfortunately, that doesn’t give Oakland any more money in the bank. Here are five players the Athletics can’t afford to have on their opening day roster in 2016.

Billy Butler had a decent 2015, but that isn’t good enough to keep him in Oakland. His .251 average should pave the way for him to be traded.

The Craig Gentry experiment needs to come to an end. He has repeatedly been beaten out by Sam Fuld and Coco Crisp. Another team could use him as a fourth outfielder.

Edward Mujica had decent peripherals this year but still had a 4.81 ERA. He also pitched mostly in low leverage situations, so clearly Oakland doesn’t have faith in him.

2. Fernando Abad

Fernando Abad had a decent year as the primary lefty out of the bullpen, but Daniel Coulombe had a solid audition for Oakland as well. Abad can be flipped this offseason in typical Oakland fashion.

Jesse Chavez had a very nice year, pitching 157 innings over 26 starts. Oakland has a nice set of young pitchers, including closer Sean Doolittle. Chavez was one of the feel good stories of the season for Oakland, but he shouldn't be back in 2016.
