After missing out on top free agent pitchers David Price and Zack Greinke, the Los Angeles Dodgers finally found their No. 2 starting pitcher to pair with ace Clayton Kershaw. The team and soon-to-be 32-year-old pitcher Scott Kazmir agreed to a three-year $48 million deal on Wednesday afternoon. His addition will give the Dodgers five left-handed starting pitchers as Kershaw, Kazmir, Alex Wood, Hyun-jin Ryu and Brett Anderson are all southpaws.

I’m not a baseball historian, but I’ve never seen a team go with an all-lefty rotation. It seems peculiar as the majority of MLB is full with right-handed hitters which would seem to give the hitters an advantage. One would have to think that Andrew Friedman isn’t done building this rotation. While Kershaw and Kazmir are an admirable one-two punch, Ryu is coming off an injury, Wood struggled mightily after being traded to the Dodgers and Anderson can’t be counted on because of his injury history.

Another interesting part of this deal is that it seems the Dodgers settled on Kazmir. They fully expected that they could get Greinke to re-sign, and thought that they were in the running for other pitchers as well, but the team with the most financial wherewithal in the entire league decided to stick to its guns and not overpay for a pitcher. It’s definitely shocking to see the Dodgers operate this way as there’s a lot of pressure on the team to win soon.
