Shane Greene Can Provide Value For Detroit Tigers In 2016

By Brad Faber

Throughout spring training, the Detroit Tigers have been greeted by a few negatives, mostly in the form of injuries, but there have also been quite a few positives as well. One of the bright spots for the Tigers has been the reemergence of Shane Greene.

Greene, who first came to the Tigers in a three-way deal that included the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks back in December of 2014, famously got off to a great start last season, going 3-0 with an 0.39 ERA and a 0.74 WHIP. However, the rest of his season didn’t go nearly as well, and he underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in August. Greene, who also appeared in seven games in Triple-A Toledo last season, finished his year in Detroit with a 4-8 record, a 6.88 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.

This spring, however, Greene appears healthy and ready for another chance. Through 13.2 innings of work, he has pitched to the tune of a 2.63 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. The way things are going, it is beginning to look like he is now a pretty safe bet to make the Tigers’ opening day roster as well.

With the injury to Daniel Norris, Greene is quite arguably the strongest candidate to fill the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation for the time being. That said, there are also vacancies to be filled in the bullpen, especially with Alex Wilson now looking like he is headed to the DL and Blaine Hardy perhaps soon joining him.

Regardless of what role he fills, though, Greene has clearly put himself back on the radar, and it should be fun to see what he can do in the regular season. Despite the overall rough campaign he had last year, it is important to remember that Greene posted a 1.1 fWAR through only 78.2 innings of work with the Yankees in 2014. He should be more than capable of providing solid value for the Tigers in 2016.
