Kansas City Royals' Mike Moustakas Should Benefit From Strong Spring Training

By Doug LaCerte

The Kansas City Royals will undoubtedly start the regular season with some hot bats, and fans are bound to be pleased about this. Reymond Fuentes, Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas all have spring OPS above 1.000, but how much will that translate to success in April? KC hitting coach Dale Sveum has been open about the fact that fellow Royals staple Salvador Perez is still working through some mechanical issues, but Salvy still has a .790 OPS, three home runs and 13 RBI. That’s also the same total of RBI and home runs that Moustakas has right now. After so many hot springs in a row, does it matter to Mike how well he does before the real games begin?

In last year’s spring training, Moose finished with a .911 OPS, two home runs and 11 RBI. In April, he stayed hot with three more home runs, 9 RBI and a .942 OPS. In 2014, Moose finished his Cactus League play with four long balls, 18 RBI and a ridiculous 1.290 OPS. He went deep four more times that following April, but a .157 batting average brought his OPS for that month down to .578. You may remember 2014 as the season when Moose struggled mightily at the big-league level until being demoted to KC’s Triple-A affiliate. Since learning to hit to all parts of the field, Mike’s batting average has never, and will never drop that low again.

So, this should mean the Moose will keep on breaking loose all through April and the rest of 2016.
