Trevor Story Off to Unreal Start with Colorado Rockies

By Bryan Zarpentine

There’s hitting the ground running at the start of your big league career, and then there’s what Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story has done. Story is the first player in the modern era to hit a home run in each of his first three big league games. The rookie has hit four home runs in his first three games, including two on opening night, while helping the Rockies take two out of three from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

One thing that stands out about Story’s incredible run is the fact that he did so on the road without the assistance of Coors Road. It’s also shocking to see Story experience such immediate success in the big leagues because he’s not considered one of Colorado’s top prospects. The Rockies have a farm system that is absolutely loaded, but heading into the season Story was considered by many to be outside the team’s top-10 prospects. Most talent evaluators had him pegged as a player who in a best-case scenario would turn into a useful utility player, not someone who would display such a large amount of power in such a short period of time.

It’s important to keep in mind that the only reason Story was Colorado’s opening day shortstop is because Jose Reyes is on paid leave while a punishment is determined for an alleged incident of domestic violence. If not for that, Story’s incredible story (pun intended) over the first few days of the season would not have been possible.

Of course, how long he’ll be able to keep up this string of home runs remains to be seen. It may also be important to note that Story doesn’t have a hit in the first three games that isn’t a home run, which could be interpreted a couple of different ways. There’s also the matter of what the Rockies will do when Reyes ultimately returns, as it’ll be difficult for the Rockies to keep Reyes on the bench.

However, the run Story has had to start the season will continue to give him an opportunity to prove that he can be an every day player in the big leagues, something few project he’ll be able to do in the long run. If nothing else, he’ll name will long be in the baseball record books after the unbelievable start to his career.
