San Diego Padres Appear Doomed After Worst 3-Game Start In MLB History

By Jason Shawley

The San Diego Padres weren’t expected to make any kind of pennant push in 2016, but surely no one expected what has transpired through the first three games of the season.

Their opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers was historically embarrassing. They were swept by the defending NL West champions, but that wasn’t the worst of it. They were shut out through their opening three games, and it’s the first time that has ever happened.

Opening day went about as poorly as it could’ve gone with a 15-0 defeat. They followed that up with 3-0 and 7-0 losses to close out the series.

San Diego has posted a team ERA of 8.00 which is bottoms in the league among those who have played 27 or more innings. The American League average is 4.47 and the MLB average is 4.07. The Dodgers obviously have a team ERA of 0.00, but the next best among teams that have played three games are the Pittsburgh Pirates with an earned run average of 1.86 through 29 innings pitched.

Offensively, the team managed just 11 hits, which is tied for the worst total among clubs with three games played. Only six players on the roster have collected a hit and the team batting average is .120. Jon Jay leads the team with three hits, but he carries a batting average of just .250 which is the highest of any player with more than three at-bats.

The Padres faced solid pitching in the opening series, but aside from Clayton Kershaw, there was no one they saw who should’ve shut them down to the degree that they did. It’s only three games out of 162, but expect a long, frustrating season, especially considering they play in a division with the Dodgers.
