Los Angeles Dodgers Must Consider Trading Yasiel Puig In 2016

The sheer volume of injuries the Los Angeles Dodgers have endured this season is beyond comprehension. Eventually, players will start to return from the DL, and when that happens, the team’s roster is going to start to get crowded awfully fast. At that point, the Dodgers should at least consider the idea of trading away Yasiel Puig.

The Dodgers have considered trading Puig in the past, and the time may come later in the season to revisit that idea. The young Cuban is off to a fantastic start, helping to put Los Angeles atop the NL West early in the season despite having an injured list a mile long. But if the Dodgers still have lingering questions about Puig’s effort, attitude and place in the clubhouse, this summer could be the ideal time to trade him.

Obviously, Puig has been instrumental for the Dodgers early in the season, but once they get healthy, they will have the depth on their roster to survive without him. Veteran Andre Ethier should be back from the DL by July and become a regular in the Los Angeles outfield. Meanwhile, Carl Crawford, Scott Van Slyke and Alex Guerrero should all return from the DL before too long, giving the Dodgers plenty of options in the outfield in addition to Trayce Thompson and Enrique Hernandez.

None of those players are anywhere close to Puig in terms of talent, but they give the Dodgers more than enough options to fill a potential vacancy in right field, especially with the increased production L.A. is getting from Joc Pederson in his second major league season. This could allow the Dodgers to trade Puig without it decimating their lineup, as they would still have plenty of offensive firepower coming from Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez and others.

Despite some character issues, if Puig continues to swing the bat the way he has early in the season, his value will be extraordinarily high by the time the summer trading season rolls around. Considering the fact that he’s still only 25 and will make less than $20 million between now and the end of the 2018 season when his contract expires, Puig could be worth a king’s ransom, far more than he would have been worth at last year’s trade deadline, making the ideal time to trade him.

If the Dodgers were to make Puig available, there would be plenty of suitors for him, enabling Los Angeles to make a trade that could benefit both the team’s present and future. The Dodgers could conceivably trade Puig to any team, whether they are a contender in 2016 or not, and get back a combination of prospects to enhance an already strong farm system and players who could fill a need for a potential playoff push this season.

Of course, if the Dodgers were to trade Puig this year, they would be giving up on him contributing in 2017, 2018 and possibly beyond if they were to re-sign him. However, Gonzalez appears to be far from finished, and the Dodgers still have a pair of budding offensive stars in Pederson and Corey Seager. Los Angeles also has a pair of promising outfield prospects in Cody Bellinger and Alex Verdugo, and both of them could be ready for the majors during the latter half of the 2017 season, on top of any prospects the Dodgers may acquire from trading Puig.

Obviously, trading Puig is not a slam-dunk idea. He’s having a great season and losing him midway through it would be a risky move. However, if the organization still has concerns about him, it’s an idea worth exploring. The Dodgers have enough to potentially handle the loss of Puig both in the short term and long term. Considering the potentially massive haul they could receive from trading him, it’s worth considering, even if it sounds a tad crazy.
