5 New York Mets Prospects Who Stood Out In April

The New York Mets’ farm system is not nearly as strong as it has been in past years, but the team is counting on breakout seasons from several prospects to lift it back to the top. Here is a look five Mets prospects who are off to a fast start in 2016 after an impressive April.

5. David Thompson, Third Base

Thompson was an RBI machine in April, driving in 27 runs in 23 games. He also had 12 extra-base hits, including nine doubles. That kind of performance has Thompson on track for an early-season promotion to advanced-A.

4. Gabriel Ynoa, Pitcher

After four starts in Triple-A this year, Ynoa owns a 1.48 ERA. His strikeout rate is low, but he's gotten the job done by pitching to contact. He won't force his way into the Mets' rotation, but he looks all but ready if they need another starter.

3. Wuilmer Becerra, Outfield

Becerra appears to be in the midst of a breakout season after hitting .345/.397/.414 in April. He hasn't shown much power, but there's still time for that to come. If Becerra keeps hitting he could get a midseason promotion to Double-A.

2. Robert Gsellman, Pitcher

Gsellman is off to a dominant start at Double-A through five starts, posting a 1.82 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. At this point, there's little reason why Gsellman shouldn't be promoted to Triple-A.

1. Vinny Sienna, Second Base

Sienna had a sensational April, hitting .362/.495/.536, setting the stage for so many of Thompson's RBIs. He's clearly mastered low-A ball, and the Mets should really challenge him with an immediate promotion.
