Chicago White Sox Must Consider Trading John Danks In 2016

By Nick Vorholt

The Chicago White Sox are leading the American League Central so far this season. It’s a division that has had each of the five teams predicted as the favorite to win it, depending on what prognosticator you ask. Still, the Sox should take advantage of the high price tag on starting pitching and consider moving John Danks, while the return is high.

Danks isn’t the same pitcher he was a few years ago when he signed his current contract. That has made people less likely to respect the career he has had to date. Danks is a 30-start-per-year pitcher who will have an ERA under 5 and pitch .500 ball on an average team. That may not sound sexy, but there are a ton of teams out there that would love a pitcher like Danks in their rotation. Danks is signed through this season at $14.25 million, which is about right for his consistency in this day and age.

The Sox are in need of some offense, if they want to stay in the race this season. Their best bench player is outfielder Jerry Sands. Sands is a lifetime .244 hitter with an OPS of .694. He’s the backup DH, if something happens to Avisail Garcia. Right now Garcia is only batting .214, so Sands may need to step up sooner than later.

The Sox also lack a backup first baseman on their current roster. Todd Frazier would have to move over from third which would hurt the offensive production from two positions. Of course much of this is caused by the sudden retirement of Adam LaRoche.

With the Sox hoping to make a run at the division this year, they need more offense. That offense can be had for some starting pitching. The Sox need to consider trading Danks to make this happen.
