Detroit Tigers Wise To Promote Steven Moya

Right now, the Detroit Tigers are sitting in fourth place in the AL Central with a record of 15-18. They are also in a stretch where they have lost eight of their last nine games.

It appears, however, that the Tigers’ offense may soon be getting a much-needed boost. On Thursday morning, it was reported that slugging outfielder Steven Moya had been called up from Triple-A Toledo.

Through 31 games in Toledo this year, Moya, who appeared in 20 games with the Tigers across 2014-15, was slashing an extremely impressive .310/.341/.627 with nine homers and 24 RBIs. After putting together a monster season for the Double-A Erie SeaWolves and winning the Eastern League MVP in 2014, Moya had a bit of a down season in the minor leagues last year, but he certainly appears to have found his swing once again.

Despite having a star-studded lineup, the Tigers’ offense has certainly fallen flat at times to say the very least. Over their past nine games, they have scored three runs or fewer runs on five occasions, and they currently rank just eighth in the American League with a 97 wRC+.

Moreover, left fielder Justin Upton, who signed a reported six-year, $132.75 million deal with the Tigers this past January, continues to struggle. Through 33 games, Upton is still only hitting .221/.259/.321 with two homers and a whopping 53 strikeouts. Given his track record and the type of contract the Tigers signed him to, it is tough to imagine Upton being supplanted, but it may be easier to give him a few much-needed days off now that Moya is around.

Regardless of the role that Moya ends up being used in, it is certainly exciting to see him back with the big league team. He gives the club another big power threat, and it should be quite fun to see what he can do.
