5 Players The Cincinnati Reds Must Trade Before The 2016 Deadline

By Brad Berreman

With a 17-34 record entering Tuesday, which already has them 19 games out in the National League Central, the Cincinnati Reds should be in clear sell mode ahead of July’s trade deadline. With that in mind, here are five players who should be former Reds by that point.

5. P Dan Straily

Even after a subpar outing on Monday (five runs allowed over six innings), Straily has a 3.43 ERA overall this season (3.46 ERA in nine starts). But a 4.0 BB/9 is a concern, and the Reds should be looking to sell at a high point in Straily's value.

4. 2B Brandon Phillips

Phillips used his no-trade clause to void an offseason move to the Nationals, and the rest of the $13 million he's owed this year along with 2017's $14 million could block a trade now. That said, a deal to a contender should be on the Reds' radar.

3. SP Alfredo Simon

Simon's last start was shortened by an ejection, and he has a 9.60 ERA over 10 appearances (nine starts) this season. He needs to start pitching a lot better, but in the final year of his contract, Simon may carry some trade value.

Cozart is having a productive season offensively (.297/.320/.500, six home runs, 18 RBIs and 14 doubles), and along with typically excellent defense he's a trade asset. The 30-year-old also has one more year of team control left.

1. RF Jay Bruce

Bruce was nearly traded to the Toronto Blue Jays during the offseason, and he's still a notable name on the trade block. With just this year and next left on his contract ($1 million buyout for 2017), the Reds could get a nice return in a trade.
