In the first inning of Kansas City Royals vs. New York Mets on Tuesday evening, first base umpire John Hirschbeck narrowly avoided being absolutely clobbered by the broken bat of Eric Hosmer.

Hirschbeck never saw the bat coming, and got incredibly lucky as he wasn’t protecting himself for impact.
