Starling Marte PED Suspension Crushes Pittsburgh Pirates' Playoff Chances

By Anthony Blake

Most guys who get popped for a positive PED test in MLB are trying to get that extra edge in a contract year to earn one last big deal.

For Starling Marte, entering the fourth season of a six-year, $31 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates, that’s what makes his 80-game suspension that much more puzzling.

The Buccos actually have two additional years on Marte’s deal via club options if they choose, so essentially all he had to do was continue producing after last season’s career-highs across the board in order to earn a bump in pay.

Now, the Pirates will be forced to move Andrew McCutchen back to center field and just hope that they can tread water in the race for the postseason.
