Mike Trout Out 6-8 Weeks After Torn Thumb Ligament on Headfirst Slide

By Anthony Blake

There’s a reason why they don’t let kids slide headfirst in little league – it’s dangerous.

Just ask Mike Trout, as the Los Angeles Angels lost the AL MVP candidate after he jammed his thumb sliding into second base on Sunday.

And news of the severity of his injury came down soon thereafter.

Given his numbers thus far in 2017 – .337/.461/.742 with 16 homers, 36 RBIs, 36 runs, and 10 stolen bases, as well as an AL-best in walks (36), OBP, slugging percentage, and OPS (1.203) – Trout appeared destined for another AL MVP award.

Now, that’s almost certain not to happen with a nearly two-month timetable for his return.
