Chael Sonnen has made remarks about Brazil and Brazilian fighters (Anderson Silva, Wanderlei Silva, Antonio Silva, the Nog brothers, Lyoto Machida, etc.), angering many people. Sonnen has become one of the most polarising figures in the sport, and many feel that he shouldn’t even be permitted to fight anymore. Convicted felons don’t exactly inspire sympathy.

Regardless of what you think of Sonnen personally, he sold that fight with Anderson Silva. Silva’s popularity was at a low point after his performances against Thales Leites and Demian Maia, and people desperately wanted to see him humbled. Sonnen talked a lot of trash and backed it up, giving us a fight of the year candidate for 2010. Even as he’s gone through professional and personal troubles, Sonnen has continued his insult campaign against Team Brazil.

Of course, Chael Sonnen also has a record of 1-4 against Brazilians, with all 4 losses coming by submission (perhaps this is the reason for talking a big game). 3 of those 4 losses were due to triangles. When Sonnen re-entered the UFC as the last WEC champion, Demian Maia welcomed him by submitting him with a triangle. Maia has now entered the fray in response to some of Sonnen’s recent comments about Brazil’s backwardness:

Of course, Maia is no match for Jose Aldo as proven by this Brazilian game show:

MMAth time:
Maia > Sonnen
Aldo > Maia
Therefore Aldo > Sonnen
And of course, Silva > Maia, Silva > Sonnen
