Man dies after sparring with opponent he met on the internet

Let this be a sombre reminder to everyone during what should be a festive time of the year: do not fly across the country to fight someone you only know over the internet, and if you are participating in any kind of combat sport, do it in a regulated environment.  In a bizarre story that will probably bring out Bob Reilly and other people who think mixed martial arts is wrong, a Chicago man died after some sparring with a Vancouver man at the Vancouver man’s home.

The pair allegedly met on the internet on an MMA website.  It’s unknown at this time whether or not this was some kind of internet argument or whether the parties actually wanted to spar with no ill intents.  Certainly there is no shortage of people calling out other people to fight on the internet.  The death has now been ruled a homicide.

A key thing here is that according to the facts being reported, the 2 were sparring at the Vancouver man’s residence.  For the most part, any live training should be done at gyms, not people’s houses.  There are no people supervising at someone’s residence and no medical personnel on site, which means that there is no one with professional training to assist in the critically important moments after a potentially serious injury.  Seriously, people: do not get dragged into silly internet arguments, do not offer to spar against people you know only through the internet, and keep the fights where they belong: at the gym.
