Jose Aldo will be defending his title in front of a hometown crowd tonight against Chad Mendes.  Here’s a look at the current betting lines:

Odds from BetUS Sportsbook.  Accurate as of 0815 January 14, 2012

Jose Aldo (-260) vs Chad Mendes (+200)
Pick: Mendes
Mendes has a great chance in this fight.  Aldo has not looked like the wrecking machine everyone thought he was in his last couple fights, and Mendes has incredible wrestling.  Combined with a good chin and good cardio, he’s a good underdog pick.

Vitor Belfort (-130) vs Anthony Johnson (+100)
Pick: Belfort
So “Rumble” moves up to middleweight because he walks around at 220.  He then proceeds to come in 11 pounds over the limit for middleweight.  Unprofessional much?  Anyhow, Vitor’s got the fast hands and is the best opponent Johnson has faced.

Rousimar Palhares (-550) vs Mike Massenzio (+375)
Pick: Paul Harris
Massenzio isn’t known for good sub defence.  Paul Harris takes people’s legs home.

Erick Silva (-550) vs Carlo Prater (+375)
Pick: Silva
Silva is one of the top prospects in the UFC.  While Prater has a slight advantage on the ground, Silva has enough skills to avoid bad situations.  Silva is better standing and will win this on the feet.

Edson Barboza (-280) vs Terry Etim (+210)
Pick: Barboza
Barboza has the better striking, and while Etim is a strong submission specialist he will have trouble finding a way to get this to the ground.  Etim is a decent mid level guy but Barboza is on the rise.

Thiago Tavares (-135) vs Sam Stout (+105)
Pick: Stout
This is going to be a war from all perspectives.  Stout isn’t going to get KO’d, and he has defended takedowns from better wrestlers.

Gabriel Gonzaga (-130) vs Ednaldo Oliveira (+100)
Pick: MANBEARPIG
Gonzaga should return to the UFC with a win.  As long as he doesn’t try to strike with the striker and instead use his strikes to set up the ground game, he should take this.

Yuri Alcantara (-220) vs Michihiro Omigawa (+175)
Pick: Omigawa
Omigawa has had a rough time in the UFC, but he is still a good fighter.  Alcantara has had long layoffs due to injury, and Omigawa’s got better boxing and chin.

Mike Pyle (-500) vs Ricardo Funch (+350)
Pick: Pyle
Pyle is just more experienced and skilled.  Funch took this fight on short notice, and he’s in over his head.

Antonio Carvalho (-220) vs Felipe Arantes (+175)
Pick: Carvalho
Carvalho is the better striker, can probably put the fight on the ground for awhile, and has enough sub defence to foil Arantes’ guard game.
