MMA News: Ronda Rousey responds to Cyborg Santos request for catchweight bout
Greg Bartram-US PRESSWIRE

Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey may already have her next opponent after her title match against challenger Sarah Kaufman at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman this Saturday. That name is Christiane “Cyborg” Santos.

Santos, former Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight champion, has been vocal about fighting Rousey ever since Rousey calling Santos a “cheater” after Santos failed a post-fight drug test in 2011. Cyborg responded by tweet a photoshopped picture of a bruised Gina Carano from their fight in August 2009, saying she was going to do the same to Rousey.

Since her failed drug test and suspension, which will be up in December 2012, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has been trying to convince Santos to drop to 135 pounds in hopes of booking a fight between Santos and Rousey.

In an interview with The MMA Hour, Santos said she would fight Rousey at a catchweight bout of 140 pound. She also said that she cannot make the 135 weight and that the reason Rousey dropped to bantamweight, was to run from fighting her.

She’s running to not fight me. And after, she speaks a lot of s— about me. I want to fight her soon. I’m very excited to fight her. And when we’re in the octagon, we’ll see if she says anything. And if she says anything, I can punch her.

Although she welcomed a fight with Santos, Rousey was adamant about keeping the fight at bantamweight.

If she wants to fight me than she is going to have to find a way to come down to 135. We’ll see how she does in a fair fight for once in her life. She has a history of coming in overweight to fights and I wouldn’t doubt that if we agreed to some sort of catchweight at 140, she’d show up at 145 anyway and be like ‘ah whatever, fight or not.’ She’s done this many times before. I don’t owe her anything.

Santos had come in six pounds overweight in her fight against Hitomi Akano in April 2009.

Whether Rousey emerges as the champion or drops the title to Kaufman after Saturday’s main event, a fight between her and Santos could be a great fight for fans in 2013.
