MMA Fight of the Week: Marlon Sandro vs. Pat Curran in Bellator 2011 Summer Series Final

By Al Stover

As Travis Wiuff and Attila Vegh face off in the finals of the Bellator 2012 Summer Series tournament to crown the next number one contender for the Bellator Light Heavyweight championship this Friday at Bellator 73,  featherweight champion Pat Curran was scheduled to defend his title against Patricio Freire.

Unfortunately Curran had to withdraw due to injury.

Although he is currently the champion, it was a year ago that he was on his way to a shot at the featherweight title as he and Marlon Sandro faced off in the finals of Bellator’s 2011 Summer Series tournament.

At the time, Curran, who is also the Bellator Season 2Lightweight champion, had dropped down from lightweight after losing to Eddie Alvarez in a match for the lightweight title while Sandro was looking for his first chance at gold after losing the Sengoku Featherweight championship to Hatsu Hioki.

In the first round, Sandro brought pressure, hitting Curran with jabs and kicks, but Curran would trade off with Sandro at the end of the round. The beginning of the second round saw Sandro continuing the pressure with Curran getting bruised on the eye.

Near the end of the round, Curran caught Sandro wit ha straight left than a head kick that knocked Sandro to the mat. Curran would follow up with some ground and pound.
