The rapport between UFC boss Dana White and current light heavyweight UFC champion Jon Jones doesn’t seem to be on sturdy grounds. With the UFC 151 cancellation, Dana White made it clear to the media that he was very upset with Jones’s decision to not fight against replacement Chael Sonnen. It appeared that White had calmed down weeks later, saying that he and Jones will come face to face and talk more in depth about the situation.
Well things seemed to have taken a turn for the worst when Jones said in a recent interview that he felt like a piece of meat in regards to the UFC 151 debacle. Dana White wasn’t happy at all with Jones’s comments and offered a rebuttal when he appeared on The Jim Rome Show earlier this week.
“I wonder how the piece of meat was feeling when we bought him the Bentley. I don’t know? That statement right there, drives me insane. A year and a half ago nobody knew who Jon Jones was. Now the kid’s a multimillionaire and he’s got this, that, you know? A piece of meat. Let me tell you, I know some people who are in some jobs that feel like a piece of meat, Jon Jones is far from being one of them.”
It is never good for a fighter’s boss to come on national television and criticize them for the comments they have made. It will be interesting to see where White and Jones go from hear and what their relationship will be like in the future. UFC has worked with certain fighters even when they didn’t have the best rapport with each other. See Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture.
Both of these fighters had their arguments with the company, but at the end of the day they still fought under the UFC banner. One could hope that this situation gets resolved as well because Jon Jones is one of the most talented fighters to ever compete in mixed martial arts. If history shows us anything in this matter, it is never a good idea to anger your employer and boss.
