Strikeforce fans got some devastating news today because it appears the lightweight championship between Gilbert Melendez and Pat Healy has been cancelled. The bout was scrapped due to a injury that Melendez suffered in training camp. In Zuffa, there have been so many injuries suffered by fighters in their training camps and this is just another one to add to the list. Melendez shared his thoughts about this fight being cancelled via Twitter.
“Want to say sorry to all my fans and supporters of @Strikeforce for not being able to compete. Injured myself early last week. Bummer…”
This fight was scheduled to take place Sept. 29 in Sacramento, Calif. Instead, both fighters will have to be put on the shelf so Melendez can heal. This is unfortunate because both fighters were eager to get inside the cage.
Healy was training for the fight of his life and he was coming to upset the long defending champion Melendez. Instead, he will have to wait just a little bit longer to get his championship fight, which many felt he had a good chance at winning. Healy also discussed his thoughts on the bout getting cancelled via Bloody Elbow Radio Extra Late.
“I was sitting down, I had made myself a little camp fire in my backyard and I was sitting out there and my phone rang. Usually, I have this thing where, especially before a fight, I don’t really answer the phone after 9 o’clock, but I knew Matt calling at that time, literally my heart sunk. I knew. I had this bad feeling. Matt usually doesn’t call me later like that. I knew it couldn’t be good news.”
Healy has put on an impressive winning streak, beating some of the top fighters under the Strikeforce banner. His title shot with Melendez was long-awaited, and it is unfortunate that he has to wait longer for a chance to seize his dreams of championship belt. So what’s next for Healy? Maybe an interim belt with the always dynamic Josh Thomson. Thomson has fought Melendez three times and has come up short twice. A fight with Healy seems like the most logical step for both fighters until Melendez can heal from his injuries.
So will this injury to Melendez hurt the Strikeforce banner and force them to close up shop and merge with the UFC? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below or send me a tweet @MMA_FORTE.
