It appears lightweight fighter Jeremy Stephens was arrested last night in Minneapolis, Minnesoata. This news comes via MMAJunkie.com.
According to a Minneapolis Police Department representative, Stephens was arrested at the Marriott City Center Hotel, which is this week’s UFC host hotel, and arrived at the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility at 10:44 a.m. CT local time. It’s currently unknown when Stephens is scheduled to be released from the facility.
Sources close to the matter are unsure when Stephens will be released, but this may conflict with his fight with Yves Edwards tonight for UFC on FX 5. This is just another bout they may have to be cancelled on this card. Earlier yesterday Dennis Hallman was unable to make his respective weight and was cut by the UFC for his fight with Thiago Tavares. Hopefully Stephens can make bail because his fight with Yves Edwards was expected to be a barn burner.
Stephens has yet to charged with any type of crime, which bodes well for him and for MMA fans. Still, one has to wonder what kind of event came to fruition that would cause police officials to take him into custody.
We will have more updates on the matter later during the day.
Updated: It appears Dana White has confirmed that the bout will still go down as expected. This news comes from Ariel Helwani who received this news from Dana White via text.
Now it appears that the bout is indeed off because the UFC card page for the event doesn’t show the fight, which presumes that UFC and company have cleared the bout.
Updated after the event: Dana White confirmed that Jeremy Stephens had a warrant out for his arrest for assault charges that happened in Iowa, which didn’t allow him to compete on tonight’s card against Yves Edwards.
