Jon Fitch was a man on a mission tonight against Erick Silva. He was fighting for his family, his career, and his self-worth in this high stacked welterweight division. Erick Silva had his moments in the fight, and he even almost submitted the gritty Fitch.
Fitch would survive, however. and dominate the fight on the ground for the majority of the fight. Silva tried to get back to his feet and did on several occasions. He was throwing punches with reckless abandonment and had his hands very low to the ground. Fitch would go in for the clinch and was successful, allowing him to take Silva down on many occasions.
It was a signature win for Fitch and he is right back in the mix in this division. Erick Silva showed heart in not getting stopped. It may not be his time, but he will be back stronger than ever. He just has never faced the type of grappler that Fitch is.
For Fitch, he has shown to be one of the best welterweights in the world, and this win was much needed for his relevancy. He really can go anywhere from here. Maybe a fight with Jake Ellenberger would be the most appropriate fight to determine who the next number one contender will be.
Regardless of who he faces, Fitch proved to everyone tonight that he is one of the best wrestlers in the division, and he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level, despite having such a long layoff.
