It appears UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will take on the winner of the Shogun Rua vs. Alexander Gustafsson fight, which takes place later this year. Jones is coming off a dominant victory over Vitor Belfort, which was a fight that showed his heart and skill.
Jones would submit Belfort in the fourth round, and he has since then been in the headlines about a potential super fight with Anderson Silva. Well these talks will surely diminish because Dana White said in an interview with MMAJunkie that Rua or Gustafsson will be up next for Mr. Bones.
“It’ll put one of those guys in the position (for a title shot).”
Rua and Gustaffson are two of the most exciting fighters to watch in the light heavyweight division. Rua has already come up short against the champ; a bout that showed Jones’s dominance in the stand up portion of the fight.
Many have raved about the stand up skills of Gustafsson, and his height and reach seem like they would give Bones problems on paper. It will be interesting to see which stand up style prevails when Rua and Gustafsson square off, which is set to take place December 8, 2012 for UFC on FOX 5.
It should be an exciting bout and the winner will get a chance to take on the greatest light heavyweight that the UFC has ever seen. For now, Bones will keep training and wait until the winner has surfaced.
