It was announced that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would be coaching season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter against the highly entertaining Chael Sonnen.
This move sort of comes out of left field because Jones has stated numerous times that he wouldn’t fight Chael Sonnen until he has deserved his title shot. Well apparently Dana White and company have insisted on this move, and it really couldn’t have been a better fight for either men.
Season 16 of TUF thus far has hit a record breaking season low in terms of viewers. The dynamic of the show seems to be fading along with its appeal. Couple this with some uninteresting coaching personas and this show is almost on the brink of getting cancelled.
Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen is a great way to revive the show, and you can bet that both of these fighter, namely Chael Sonnen, will bring in an audience because of their personalities in and out of the octagon.
In terms of the fight, it will also be interesting when they square off at the end of the season. Jon Jones is one of the best light heavyweights to ever compete in the UFC and his skills are rarely matched by any. Chael Sonnen has been the second best middleweight in the UFC and even almost upset the best MMA fighter in the game right now in Anderson Silva.
Sure, Jones has said he wants Sonnen to earn his title shot, but sometimes you just have to play the game. Before this fight was scheduled, many thought Jones would destroy Sonnen if they fight. This fight will be one of the biggest fights of the year and would do tremendous numbers in terms of pay per view buys.
Both fighters will gain from the bout, and I think it is a legitimate test to Jon Jones’s title. Sonnen has some of the best wrestling right now in mma, and his pressure and grappling control has never been better. With this fight, UFC can save TUF series and they can make a compelling fight that will generate a lot of revenue.
