UFC featherweight fight Dustin Poirier has made the transition to American Top Team, which is one of the premiere grappling camps in mixed martial arts.
This transition seems like an excellent move on Poirier’s part because he has competent grappling skills, and can sharpen them even more with the studs that train at ATT. Guys like Cole Miller, Brad Pickett, Mike Brown, Thiago Alves, and Hector Lombard will surely be able to enhance his jiu jitsu game and his stand up game as well.
Dustin is coming off an absolute war to the Chan Sung Jung. He came up short in his bout, getting submitted in the fourth round by way of d’arce choke.
It has a hard fought bout, but Poirier seemed to be on the short end of the exchanges in the stand up portion of the fight. Training with guys at American Top Team will be able to shore up these deficiencies, which could result in a top featherweight fighter if he wasn’t already.
Poirier was well on his way to a potential title shot, but his fight with Jung showed where he needs improvement. It will be interesting to see what type of adjustments he makes with his new training in ATT.
They have a history of producing some of today’s top talent, and they are arguably one of the best jiu jitsu training camps in mixed martial arts right now. Poirier can only go up from here, and it will be interesting to see how he fairs in his next fight.
