UFC welterweight Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson will no longer be meeting Besam Yousef on the undercard of UFC 154. He injured his knee this week, and will now require surgery to repair the damage.

According to MMAFighting, Thompson’s primary injury was to his meniscus; the surgery to repair it will take place on Monday. He is expected to be able to return to normal training in about eight weeks.

Thompson’s record in mixed martial arts competition currently stands at 6-1; his only loss was in his last fight at UFC 145 in April against Matt Brown, in which he wound up on the short end of a judges’ decision. He is also a highly decorated kickboxer, with a record of 63-0 with 30 knockouts. His UFC debut took place at UFC 143 against Daniel Stittgen; that fight ended in extremely memorable fashion with a dramatic headkick KO. Thompson is known for his unique style of striking, which incorporates significant elements of kempo karate, a discipline in which he hold a black belt.

Yousef also holds a 6-1 record in MMA, with a 0-1 record in the UFC. With Thompson out of their scheduled bout and no replacement opponent yet assigned, it is currently not known whether Yousef will still compete at UFC 154. That show is scheduled to take place in Montreal, Canada on November 17. It will be headlined by the championship unification bout between Georges St. Pierre and Carlos Condit. This will be St. Pierre’s first fight since he injured his knee nearly a year and a half ago.
