Mixed martial arts icon Randy Couture made an appearance on MMA Uncensored Live on Spike TV recently. Of the topics discussed, perhaps none were more intriguing than Couture’s take on the upcoming fight for the light heavyweight championship of the UFC between current title holder Jon Jones and challenger Chael Sonnen.
Couture and Sonnen used to train together at Team Quest, and Couture’s familiarity with Sonnen’s abilities leads him to believe that Jones might have more problems with Sonnen than many expect. He said,
“Chael has a great opportunity to win this fight, actually. Technically I see a similar style fight as Anderson Silva. If he wades through him and makes Jon Jones wrestle him the entire fight, I think he can win that. He can do it, but he needs that gameplan. He needs to make it a wrestling match, start to finish.”
Some fans and analysts have complained about giving Sonnen the title shot even though he has not competed at light heavyweight in some time (he is moving up from the middleweight division to challenge Jones). However, Couture disagrees with this attitude, saying that the UFC needs to make smart business decisions to stay solvent – and that the highly anticipated bout between the two polarizing figures is nothing if not a smart business decision.
Couture also believes that Jones may have made a mistake in turning down a short-notice fight with Sonnen at UFC 151 in September, a show that was cancelled when Jones’s original opponent Dan Henderson was injured. He implied that the preparation of a full training camp may benefit Sonnen more than Jones when they do meet next April.
