UFC light heavyweight fighter Stephan Bonnar has failed his drug test with his bout against Anderson Silva at UFC 153. This news comes via mmajunkie.com.
Bonnar tested positive for drostanolone, an anabolic steroid, while Herman’s screen was flagged for marijuana metabolites.
Stephan Bonnar was also in the news earlier this week because he has decided to hang up the gloves and retire. Losing to Anderson Silva is certainly not the way Bonnar intended his career to end, but testing positive for steroids is even worse. This should definitely impact his status in being inducted to the UFC Hall Of Fame, but UFC and company will probably just sweep this under the rug and induct him anyways.
It seems like more and more fighters are trying to cut corners in order to get a superior advantage. Drug testing has made significant advances in screening for such drugs, but fighters seem to always find ways of testing clean.
This wasn’t the case for Stephan Bonnar, and it will be interesting to see what the MMA community thinks about this. Sure, fighting Anderson Silva is a daunting task for any man to handle, but he could have least done it clean. I have been a huge fan of Stephan Bonnar for many years now.
His unrelenting style and tenacity brought excitement to every one of his fights, but it makes me question his character and also if he tried PED’s or steroids in his other fights. It also raises some red flags about how many other fighters are taking drugs to get ahead of the curve.
