Shannon Knapp is the man…well sort of

Knapp, president of Invicta FC, was nominated for the “Leading Man of the Year” category for the “World MMA Awards” presented by Fighter’s Only Magazine.

The award recognizes the power players in different mixed martial arts organizations. Joining Knapp in this category are UFC figure heads, President Dana White and co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney and ONE FC owner Victor Cui.

This is the first nomination for Knapp in this category and with Invicta FC, the first all-women’s American promotion, opening in 2012; she may seem like a relative newcomer. However, the Invicta president has a lengthy history in MMA and has worked for several well-known MMA promotions, including UFC and Strikeforce.

“Leading Man of the Year” is not the only award Knapp could walk away from at the ceremony. Invicta FC was nominated for “Best Promotion,” along with UFC, Strikeforce, One FC and Bellator.

Invicta held three fight cards from May to August, each of them featuring  competitive and memorable bouts, and garnering praise from fighters, fans and critics.

At their last event, the promotion crowned Jessica Penne (10-1) as its first atomweight (105-pounds) champion. The promotion has also made headlines with their talent exchanges with Strikeforce, Super Fight League and Jewels. Carla Esparza and Ayaka Hamasaki are set to fight for the Invicta Strawweight (115-pounds) at Invicta FC 4, sometime in 2013.

The “World MMA Awards” are chosen by fans, who have until Dec. 31 to vote . The ceremony is expected to take place in Las Vegas in January 2013.

Dana White Doesn’t Think Conor McGregor Can Beat Rafael dos Anjos

Things are getting interesting ahead of UFC 196. The headlining fight at that March 5 pay-per-view event will see UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor move up to lightweight to face the champion of that division Rafael dos Anjos. If McGregor succeeds he will become the first UFC fighter to hold belts in two different divisions simultaneously. The oddsmakers have McGregor as the favorite ahead of the fight. UFC president Dana White doesn’t necessarily hold the same opinion.
