Joe Silva just booked another compelling match-up for UFC on Fox 6 in the featherweight division, as Clay Guida is reportedly set to take on Hatsu Hioki on January 26, 2012. Both of these fighters will be looking to grab a number-one contender spot in the division, which is currently reigned over by Jose Aldo.
This will be Guida’s first trip down to the featherweight division, and it will be interesting to see how he deals with the weight cut. This move down was predicated on his inability to beat Gray Maynard, which was an awkward fight for both men.
In that fight, Guida didn’t display killer instinct and aggressiveness that has made him so popular in his UFC tenure. Instead, Guida constantly avoided the action, and it will will be interesting to see what type of strategy he tries to implement when he takes on Hioki.
Hioki is coming into this fight also off a loss to Ricardo Lamas. Many felt that Hioki would be the man to challenge Jose Aldo for his belt, but his title aspirations were derailed in his last fight. Hioki has one of the better ground games in the featherweight division, having 12 submission wins on his resume. He is also one of the most experienced in the division, sporting a record of 26-5-2.
This fight should certainly be entertaining for the fans. Both fighters are coming off losses, which should add to the intensity and desperation of both fighters when they square off. Will Guida be able to use his size now that he has dropped down a weight class? Will Hioki be able to rebound off the tough loss with Lamas and his his grappling skills against Guida? Stay tuned!
