Michael Bisping: ‘There’s no question that I’m the No.1 contender’
Michael Bisping is set to take on Vitor Belfort in a middleweight bout, which takes place on January 19, 2013. Both fighters will be looking to prove who the superior striker is, and apparently Bisping thinks he has done enough to warrant a title shot if he comes out victorious.
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, Bisping shared his thoughts about his current status in the middleweight division.
“If I beat Vitor Belfort, I think there’s no question that I’m the No. 1 contender. And I’m willing to put my money where my mouth is. I think I deserve it. If I beat Vitor, I deserve it. If I don’t beat him, then I don’t deserve to be in a title fight anyway.”
A win over Belfort would certainly warrant a shot at the middleweight title, which is currently being held by Anderson Silva and his decision to fight big name fights. Bisping certainly has his hands full with the former middleweight number-one contender Vitor Belfort. Both fighters possess excellent standing skills, but Belfort has the slight advantage in power.
If Biping wants to come out victorious, he will need to stay on the outside and pick apart Belfort with his punches and kicks. Also, he may even want to take this fight to the ground as soon as possible in order to find the path of least resistance.
Bisping has underrated jiu-jitsu, and the ground game might be his key to victory. Whatever is next for the winner of this bout, they may be sitting on the sidelines until Anderson either gives up his belt entirely or decides to continue his epic run in the UFC middleweight division.
