The UFC 156 card is certainly shaping up because it was announced today via MMAJunkie.com that Jon Fitch will battle Demian Maia for a chance to be considered next line for the welterweight title shot.
A welterweight matchup between perennial contender Jon Fitch (24-4-1 MMA, 14-2-1 UFC) and Brazilian submission ace Demian Maia (17-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) is the latest addition to February’s UFC 156 event.
UFC officials today announced the new contest.
This news is certainly intriguing given the fact that both fighters are coming off some impressive victories. Jon Fitch will be coming into this fight off a much needed win over Erick Silva. In the bout, Fitch showed the gritty grappling control that made him a perennial contender in one of the UFC’s most competitive divisions.
Maia is coming in with his own momentum, having destroyed Rick Story with a brutal neck crank; a move that is rarely effective in MMA. If there was anyone one to do it, it’s Maia because he is one of the best jiu jitsu practitioners in the UFC.
Both of these fighters possess interesting stylistic challenges for each other. Jon Fitch is virtually impossible to submit, which is a testament to his ever-improving ground game at The American KickBoxing Academy. Maia is one of the best finishers when the fight hits the mat, which makes this fight all the more interesting and telling.
Which fighter will have the superior grappling skills when the square off? Will Maia be able to continue his momentum since dropping down to welterweight and finish a gritty Jon Fitch? Stay tuned!
