The condition of former boxing champion Hector “Macho” Camacho, age 50, worsened overnight according to various reports. Camacho was taken to the hospital after being shot in the face, on Nov. 20, outside of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Camacho was in serious condition on his first night at the hospital and went into cardiac arrest at around 4:15 a.m on Nov. 21.

According to ESPN.com, Centro Medico director Dr. Ernesto Torres told reporters during a media briefing that “doctors are still performing tests on Camacho before meeting with his family.”

Former manager Ismael Leandry said  Camacho’s mother flew in from New York on Nov. 22 and will lead the discussion to decide whether or not the former boxer should be taken off life support.

“We just have to wait to see if ‘Macho’ gets better. It’s a hard battle,”

Camacho was shot on the passenger’s side of a Ford Mustang after a shooter opened fire on the vehicle. According to police statements, another man, Adrian Alberto Mojica Moreno, was shot next to the vehicle after he got out and tried to run.

According to EPSN, Mojica Moreno’s relationship with Camacho was unknown, however detective Alex Diaz told ESPN that there were nine bags of cocaine in the vehicle, which was registered to Moreno. There was also an additional open bag in the car.

Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3 and held championships in three different weight classes. He has fought notable opponents such as Sugar Ray Leonard, Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar de La Hoya.

Although he shined in the ring, Camacho has had his share of drug, alcohol and marital problems. His ex-wife has previously filed domestic abuse complaints against him.

In 2007, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for burglary in Mississippi.  A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation, which the former champion would violate and end up serving two weeks in jail.

However, not all of Camacho’s life was bad outside of the ring. According to ABC News, Camacho appeared on television shows like “Mira Quien Baila,” a show similar to Dancing with the Stars and “El Gordo y La Flaca.”

Police in Puerto Rico are still investigating the incidents that led to the shooting of Camacho. Torres said that they’re going  to,” ask the people of Puerto Rico to keep praying.”
