Renan Barao to fight Michael McDonald for Bantamweight Title
It appears interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao will be fighting Michael McDonald for the championship with Dominick Cruiz having to undergo a second ACL surgery. This news comes via Ariel Helwani‘s Twitter account:
Obviously, this is devastating news for Dominick Cruz, who is expected to go under the knife a second time to repair some problems with his ACL. Cruz was expected to come back and fight Renan to unify the belt in a bout that had fireworks written all over it.
Instead, fans will be treated with a title fight between Renan and rising contender McDonald. McDonald has amassed a record of 15-1 and his only loss has came at the hands of Cole Escovedo by way of TKO. Since that loss, he has gone 8-0, beating the likes of Alex Soto, Miguel Torres and avenging his loss to Escovedo by way of KO.
Barao has took the bantamweight division by storm, improving to to an impressive 29-1 after a dominating win against Urijah Faber. In the fight, Barao landed some great leg kicks and controlled the stand up portion too. Barao is one of the most dangerous jiu jitsu practitioners in the bantamweight division and he will be looking to defend his strap when he takes on McDonald later next year.
This will be a great fight to watch because both fighters can finish both both on the feet and standing. Will Barao be able to keep up his winning ways and derail the hype that surrounds McDonald? Stay tuned!
