Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche to meet at UFC 157
Since it was announced that Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight (135-pounds) champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey signed with the UFC and would become the promotion’s first women’s bantamweight champion, there has been speculation of who she would face her in her first title defense.
Although many would assume that Rousey would be facing “Cyborg” Santos in what many would consider the biggest fight in women’s MMA, there have been new rumors that Rousey’s first title defense may be against someone other than the Cyborg.
TMZ.com reported that Rousey’s first opponent will be powerhouse and former title contender Liz “Girlrilla” Carmouche in the main event UFC 157 on Feb. 23. UFC President Dana White confirmed the match at the UFC on Fox 5 pre-fight press conference.
“That was obviously the fight we wanted to make at 135 pounds. We worked hard to make that fight. I believe that this fight will happen and I truly believe the next fight will be the Cyborg [Santos] one.”
Carmouche and Rousey have both expressed the desire to fight each other. Although Rousey has an impressive record and judo background, Carmouche has the wrestling and the power that could make this a very exciting battle on the ground.
Both fighters also have an impressive back story Carmouche is a former marine who had tours in Iraq and the first openly fighter to sign with Zuffa. Rousey had a speech impediment as a child and overcame childhood tragedy to become one of the best judo practitioners in the world.
What’s even more intriguing about this fight is that the winner will most likely face the Cyborg in the future.
For now, we will have to wait until Feb. 23.
