A pivotal middleweight bout takes place this Friday night on FX between Hector Lombard and Rousimar Palhares. Both of these fighters have a lot on the line.
For Lombard, he wants to prove that the hype behind him is warranted. For many years, Lombard was considered one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA. Having been a staple under the Bellator for many years, Lombard wanted to step up the competition and make the transition to the UFC.
Lombard’s plans were spoiled, however, as Tim Boetsch was able to execute a brilliant game plan that won him a unanimous decision. Now 0-1 in the UFC, Lombard will look to get back into the win column, and make a serious run at the middleweight title when he takes on Palhares this weekend.
Palhares will also be looking to get back to his winning ways, losing in devastating fashion to Alan Belcher earlier in the year. In the bout, Palhares would lock up his patented leg lock, but Belcher was able to reverse and land some vicious shots on top.
Both of these fighters possess fight-ending abilities on the feet and on the ground, and it essentially is the striker vs. grappler match up. Lombard has over 16 finishes by the way of TKO or KO. Palhares has over 10 submission victories by way of heel hook or knee bar, so the likelihood of this fight going to the distance is slim to none.
Will Palhares be able to lock up his viscous leg lock in hopes of getting back into the mix in the middleweight division? Or will Lombard prove the hype is warranted and get his first win in the UFC? Stay tuned!
