UFC middleweight fighter Hector Lombard made a huge statement tonight, knocking out Rousimar Palhares in the first round. Palhares, one of the most dangerous leg lock specialists in the UFC, seemed to have his leg kicks working earlier against Lombard. He would land and then back up as Lombard pressed the action.
However, Lombard would continue to press and would finally clip Palhares, sending him to the canvas. Lombard would storm in and put the coffin nails in, landing some shots until the ref was forced to step in. Welcome back Mr. Lombard!
This is Lombard’s first win under the UFC banner, and it seemed like he was eager to erase the memory of his last fight against Tim Boetsch, which didn’t result in his favor. Lobmard was taking on a game Palhares, who had a lot of motivation because he was coming off a loss. Lombard proved to be the better man, and he will look to continue his ascent up the middleweight division, which is currently being reigned by Anderson Silva.
Lombard has always been one of the most feared strikers in MMA, and he certainly proved it again tonight. Tonight, Lombard made a splash in the UFC middleweight division. Maybe he will get matched up with the winner of the Alan Belcher vs. Yushin Okami fight.
Or, maybe the UFC will match him up against the winner of Michael Bisping vs. Vitor Belfort fight. Whatever is next for Lombard, who is a native of Australia, he put on a show for his home crowd.
